• $2 million towards upgrades to the Morley Recreation Centre
  • $75,000 towards a feasibility study at the Morley Recreation Centre

WA Labor candidate for Morley Amber-Jade Sanderson today announced a $2m pledge to redevelop the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre if a McGowan Labor Government is elected on March 11.

The facility is owned by the City of Bayswater, and run by YMCA with a strong focus on community and youth engagement. It is also used by the Morley Scouts, East Perth Eagles Basketball Club and the Perth Bayswater Rugby Club.

Ms Sanderson said WA Labor will provide $2 million towards construction works plus an extra $75,000 towards a feasibility study to get the project started.

The entire project is estimated to cost approximately $6 million and will require both Federal Government and local government contributions.

WA Labor’s funding pledge will allow the sporting facility to carry out desperately needed upgrades to meet the growing demand from the local community.

“WA Labor understands the importance of sport and recreation facilities to help promote an active and healthy lifestyle for the community,” said Ms Sanderson.

“The Morley Recreation Centre means so much to so many people with programs for kids, adults, people with disabilities and it’s also the home to the East Perth Eagles Basketball Club and the Perth Bayswater Rugby Club.

“With this funding a new precinct will be created to provide an extra court for the East Perth Eagles, new facilities for the Perth Bayswater Rugby Club and a new area for the Morley Scouts.”

“These works will do a lot to attract new members and welcome more people to participate in local sports.”

Shadow Treasurer Ben Wyatt and Shadow Minister for Sports and Recreation Peter Watson was also at today’s announcement.

“This investment will allow residents of Morley and surrounding area to maintain an active lifestyle, which has flow-on effects for health and quality of life of the community,” said Mr Wyatt.

Mr Watson said quality sports and recreation facilities is an important factor in developing strong, connected communities.
