Mirrabooka asbestos landfill application refused by DWER

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) has today refused an application to amend the license for the Mirrabooka landfill to accept asbestos containing material, at 501 Alexander Drive, Mirrabooka.

We welcome this refusal from DWER and are pleased to advise the community of this outcome.

Together, with the local community, we have shared concerns about the potential risk of exposure to nearby residential housing and schools in both the Mirrabooka and Morley Electorates.

“After careful consideration and a large number of stakeholder submissions, it was decided that the risk of asbestos exposure to nearby sensitive receptors, including residential housing and a school, was unacceptable in accordance with DWER’s Guideline for Risk Assessments. As such, the amendment application was refused on 2 October 2024.”

– DWER Media Statement released Wednesday 2 October.

This is a great outcome for our local community and is a result of strong advocacy from members of the local community working together with local representatives.

We will keep the local community updated on progress following DWER’s decision and will be seeking urgent updates from DWER to confirm the compliance activities moving forward and continue to work to assure the community that DWER’s regulations are followed by the proponent.

“As your local members, Meredith and I have been focussed on working with members of the community over the last few months regarding the proposed Waste Disposal Site at 501 Alexander Drive, Mirrabooka.

“We have stood with the community in opposition of the proposal, and we have shared the communities’ concerns.
