Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson made the announcement while visiting Return-It in Geraldton, which has received the most containers of any refund point outside of the Perth metropolitan area and the third highest amount overall in the State.

Total donations in the Mid-West now exceed $116,000, with more than $68,500 going to community groups and more than $48,000 to local charities.

These include schools, the School of the Air, sporting clubs and the local Rotary Club.

Containers for Change was launched on October 1, 2020 and encourages Western Australians to return eligible drink containers for a 10-cent refund.

More than 627 million containers have been returned State-wide since the launch.

Donations can be made to any organisation fundraising through Containers for Change by using the groups scheme ID.

Comments attributed to Environment Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"Two million dollars in donations is a fantastic achievement for the people of Western Australia. We have done it 10 cents at a time, which just shows that every returned container counts.

"I'd like to thank the Geraldton community for embracing Containers for Change. Thanks to your generosity, 28 local charities and community groups have received much-needed funding.

"Containers for Change results in an increased recycling rate in Western Australia, diverting tonnes of recyclable material from landfill."
