  • First of 102 patient rooms completed as a prototype in new Mental Health Unit
  • Prototype room enables fine tuning ahead of full fit out
  • Mental Health Unit opens later this year including youth and older adult beds

The first of 102 contemporary person-centred and recovery-focused patient rooms at Joondalup Health Campus' (JHC) new Mental Health Unit (MHU) has been completed.

In a significant expansion of services in our northern suburbs, the new unit will more than double the current capacity of Joondalup's MHU and for the first time, will cater for youth (16-24 year olds) and older adults (65+ year olds).

Consumers, carers and clinicians contributed ideas for the design of the new building, including careful consideration of how design could best support patients in their recovery.

The new unit provides an innovative, light filled environment with multiple recreation zones, and large, shared open lounge and dining areas, and visitor spaces.

It also boasts landscaped courtyards, activity areas and a gymnasium.

A purpose-built recovery hub has been incorporated, which will allow patients to connect with family and friends, community groups and peer supports.

The new MHU is part of the $256.7 million expansion of Joondalup Health Campus.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:

"This significantly expanded unit will make a real difference to those Western Australians needing acute mental health support in Perth's northern suburbs and provides much-needed beds for younger and older people.

"The McGowan Government is investing heavily in health infrastructure projects and this important project is one of many initiatives that will transform the patient experience in WA."

Comments attributed to Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:

"Mental health is a challenge in our community, and the new Mental Health Unit at Joondalup Health Campus will provide the right environment and facilities to support vulnerable people in their time of need.

"What I am so proud of is the support that our new unit will provide for young people - something I have been advocating for here in Joondalup."
